Ellsworth and Frances life Together
Ellsworth Jefferson
"Cap" Snowden was a farmer who had a coalmine on his farm. He and his wife, Frances Virginia "Hull" Snowden, and their children
mined the coal with hand picks and horse drawn wagons and carried it to sales points. The farm was on Corn Hollow Road,
off Beech Grove, in Rutland, OH.
Later Ellsworth, "Cap", worked
at other coalmines, where he sustained a disabling back injury that bothered him until his death in 1932.
In 1919 Cap and Frances purchased
the former Polly Jackson Grocery Store on Main Street in Rutland, OH. They also had a restaurant in the store and living quarters
in the rear. In 1926 a fire, which started in the Rathburn Store, engulfed most of the downtown Rutland, OH business
section, including the Snowden Store. They temporarily operated the business from the old Powers Hotel south of the Leading
Creek Bridge in Rutland, OH. They rebuilt the next year and ran a general store selling shoes, hardware, medicine and food.
After rebuilding the store and
getting it established, the Snowden family lived in the Angie Mutchler white brick home on Salem Street, Rutland, OH.
Later they moved into the living quarters above the store. Frances continued to operate the store until 1952. In 1952
she would have been 86 years old!! Their son Roy Frances Snowden continued to live in the house until 1957. Afterwards
the building was leased to Pomeroy National Bank for their first Rutland Branch office. The branch was built, and still stands
there today. (excerpts taken from Meigs County Book, Volume One, 1979., submission excerpts by Suzy Parker Carpenter Hysell)
